I have a friend who has a really skittish who is 4 months old and is really skittish anny advice will be appreciated.
Answers:
What I normally did with a skitish colt was sit in his enclosure. Get him use to your smell and your presence. It takes a lot of time and patience but eventually you will be able to touch him or her.
Once you have gained enough trust to touch. Begin touching them running your hands down thier neck , sides belly, feet. Slowly getting them used to being touched.
By this time the colt should be used to you and no longer afraid. You should now bring in the halter. Let him smell it use it when touching him then slowly ease it on. Once its on and he seems comfortable with it. Try pulling gently. Eventually once he gets the idea of what you want him to do he will be halter broken.
This method takes several weeks but the results can't be beat. You will have a friend not an animal that has been broken. And they will do anything for you. Good luck
Is he weaned? Your friend should have started from day one. But if every day in his stall put a halter on him so he gets used to it. get the proper size not too loose or tight. You should be able to fit two fingers under the noseband. After a couple days attach a lead shank to his halter and lead him after his dam. He should follow her. Every time he follows reward him with verbal praise and a good neck rub or grooming. He should get used to leading. DON"T give him treats that often or he will come to demand them and bite if he doesn't get one. Just remember to be gentle and soothing. Take your time and dont use whips or any physical fights to get your way.
Good luck..this foal should of been imprinted and this would not be an issue. At any rate, to give more solid adequate advice I would like more information. But to start out w/you need to get this foal to trust you and then add the halter and leave it on so you can work on this foal every day. If the foal hasnt been weaned this will help you greatly for you can work on the mare to get the foal use to you slowly progress to him. When walking the mare you can walk the foal as well. The mare will help the foal to learn what you ask of him. Good luck.time and persistance is all you got now. Just remember one thing and one thing only..a horse never forgets a bad experience so think before reacting.
If you can walk up to him, put a hankier chief or a belt in your back pocket, start petin him then slip it around his neck. Then start leading him around, once he gets used to have someone bring you a halter and lead rope, let him smell, see, and feel the halter, next slip it in him, then clip the lead on the halter, take your belt off his neck, and lead him around. Be sure to leave the halter on him and lead him around everyday.
What you could do is approach the mother and don't pay the foal any mind. Totally ignore the foal. Concentrate on petting the mom. The foal will soon come up to you, curious as to why you are not paying it any mind. When the foal is close enough, and starts smelling you, you can lower your hand to the foal. Let the foal smell your hand and then slowly move to pet the foal's neck. When the foal is more comfortable with you, get the foal against its mother, wrap one arm under the neck and the other around the rump. Then have someone put a halter on the foal, once it is restrained. I hope this helps you!
