How do you get rid of/scare coyotes away?

The best way is to take preventative steps. If you have dogs, cats or any pet that stays outside at night, have them in a tall fence. If coyotes are hungry enough, they can jump an 8 ft fence. Pick up any food that may be left outside (like pet food, and don't put food that may be in your garbage out before the trash is picked up). If a pet (dog) is left outside and is in heat during mating season which is around February - March they will breed with it. The female dog will then run away and have the puppies which are called Coys. These are more dangerous as they have the ability to be wild like Coyotes and aren't scared of people, and will even attempt to take small children not just animals if they are hungry enough. Coyotes travel the most between dusk and dawn and sleep during the day. But they can come out during that time.

The other night I was walking and I saw about 6 coyotes go into a neighbors back yard, it just shocked me so much and I watches, she had a very large bag of dog food on her patio, they all ate and ate the dog food, this was about dusk!! I called her on the phone to tell her as she does Day care! She said she had noticed they could not keep enough dog food and had been leaving it out in case they were late getting home and the dog got hungry but she had though the dog was really over eating!! I then told the people behind me and they said the have noticed a spot under their fence where a dog it appeared had been getting in and they too have dog food outside..if you are doing that this could be part of the problem

Sorry, but you don't scare coyotes away. You either terminate them with extreme prejudice or call your local wildlife authorities for assistance in removal.

Coyotes are fairly timid animals; things that make noise may help. Also, be sure to keep things out of your yard that may attract them - especially potential sources of food! Make certain that small pets are not left in the yard at night, as the coyote may view them as a potential midnight snack. Own a Great Pyrenees dog and the coyotes will not be back. The Pyrenees will kill the coyote very quickly but yet this type of dog is a wonderful family pet and can also be taught to protect lots of other animals.

I don't believe you can scare them away, here in Alabama they are everywhere. Afriend in animal control said they caught some in downtown parking decks, one got into the bank somehow, and all the outlying areas have them. They are real bad about getting cats and they like to eat in your gardens. Don't say fence, cause they can jump a fence like a deer

My community has a HUGE problem with coyotes. If you call animal control, they'll come back if you have as many as we do. The only way to keep them away that has succeeded for us was a big dog. Down the road, they have two Newfoundlands and never had a problem. We have a Lab mix and a Border Collie mix. Their presence does benefit. They'll bark like crazy if they see a coyote, but they would get hurt if they ever fight a coyote. Next door's Great Pyranese helps out farm out a lot. The coyotes don't bother our cows so that's not a problem. Closer to our house are the chickens. The Great Pyranese will chase away the coyotes trying to get our flock. He's such a good dog. If I could take the time to take care of that beautiful coat, I would get one in a heartbeat because they're the most faithful dogs and I've had a lot of dogs. I feel safe with that dog because it feels like he could fight off anything.
