What Kind? Whats their Name? I have a kitten called Lily and two cats at my parents called mother and baby (hehe i know that is original)

we have 4 and occasionally any strays that wander our way. grace is 2 she's an american pit, than we have faith who is 4 months and an american pit/rottweiler. grace is her mother who really wasn't suppose to get breed.than we have walker,who is a year old manx tomcat that is graces' pet and our newest member is libra.she is 4 months old and just an ordinary mixed kitten that no one else wanted.

I have quite an intersting little family here in my house. I have a longhaired gorgeous black and white cat named Lilo. Lilo is very verbal, she talks back to me and even enjoys singing opera lol. She's my baby. I have a 2 year old grey tabby who is also very verbal.but actually, I'd say she's more VOCAL than verbal. She enjoys berrating me with her terrible angry meow when she is less than impressed with my behaviour. Then we have the king of the mansion..RONIN- the part Hotot part Dwarf rabbit. He has the run of two bedrooms, a hallway, and a bathroom. He is White with black circles around his eyes and is absolutely beautiful. When he's in the mood, he tollerates the cats in his territory, and he and Lilo actually snuggle sometimes. Rory like to chase him, but she knows when he's had enough and when it's her turn to turn around and run away. So yup, those are my babies :D

I only have one pet but its a dog and i love him SO much. even if i call him puppy hes really dig and his name is Simba(after the lion king) and hes a golden retriever. Hes about 3 years old and starts jumping around when you get home.. and he HATE the waters

First I have a Dachound,and a palmeranian mix. Her name is Lexus Lee. Shes really long, short legs and her ears are bigger than her whole body lol. Shes still a baby, and her teeth are falling out so her tounge is always hanging out. She wont eat her own food she has to eat the cats food. She barks at everything that moves. Its a really odd mix but i think she is adorable. Then I have a kitten names Buca Jo. She is a deluted calicol. When I sleep at night she trys nursing off my ear. She bit it once and I bleed everywhere! She also wont eat her kitten food she only eats dog food! Then We have a couple others that like live in the walls lol Maybe a couple squirrels and some Racoons. I have to block the chimney so they get out lol.

I have a pal named Gabe. He loves me sooooo much, but mostly he is sooooo loved by our family. He gets really nervous when one of the four of us leaves the house. He will pace until we are all home. If all four of us leave, he goes to his kennel to sleep until we begin coming home again. He will always be on the same floor as me no matter what (I'm Mom), he knows the sound of my husband's truck from a block away (we live on a busy road), he knows when my daughter gets home from school he has just a while to wait for my son to get home. He is so nice and loyal. He's a pitbull/lab mix--really smart.

I also have a beautiful Betta fish named Pirate. I love how pretty he is and how relaxing he is to watch. I move his bowl from room to room depending on where we all are.

I have one cat named Tiger. He is extremely people oriented. He greets everyone at the door. He loves to be around groups, but not in the middle of them. Just so that he is around the action, he is happy. He is orange striped and lives in Auburn, Ala. with two Auburn University graduates (hence the name Tiger). He has so many fun quirks, but I am often told that he is the coolest cat around!

i have one persian cat, her name is mia and she is a princess. she even has her very own crown. she is a tabby, with a pretty little "M" on her forehead (hence the reason we named her Mia) she loves to play tag, and she loves to play with her "Babies"(you know, those little colored mice you buy at gricery stores) she also loves wet towels. right after you shower, she'll follow you up to your room, and wait quietly while you change, then once your done with the towel, she's all over it! she also loves it if you scratsh her head. she loves to sleep on a pillow aove your head when your sleeping, and she purrs so much. i love her more than chocolate.

A shitszu - Charlie - who is as old as the hills and as sweet as can be. He might as well be stuffed since all he does is lay around now, but is still wonderful and much loved. A cocker spaniel - Homer - after the Illiad, not SImpson (although he acts more like Simpson (if he could talk his main word would be DOH) and is so loving and lovable it is both pathetic and fantastic, and last but not least, Archie, who is a cocker?shitszu mix, but is no relation to the other two dogs. We did build a bridge though between the cocker and shitszu with Archie, which I think is very cute. Each of them is a real scutch (pain in the butt), but are worth every aggravation and annoyance in that they are so loving. If I didn't previously believe in God, which I did, then these dogs would have proven His existence for me.

My husband and I, have 5 dogs. We have a chocolate lab "Jake", a black lab named "Doozer" (from "Fragel Rock"), 2 Chihuahuas "Mickey" and "Rico", and a Chihuahua/pug cross named "Miles". They are all rescues, all loved very much. We live next to the river and our labs love to go swimming! They have a great life are very healthy. They are well trained, obedient and the best dogs ever! They fill our lives with great joy!

I have 4 pets. I have two dogs. I also have two cats. Chase is my oldest dog. He is 9 years old and is a sheltie and rat terrier mix. He is very fat and short, but he is a very beautiful dog. His favorite toy is a ball or a Frisbee. My other dog is a Border Collie and Greyhound mix. His name is Sammy. He looks a lot like a short haired Border Collie. He loves to chew on raw hides. He is also skinny and muscular. His legs are 13 inches long. He could probably go from 0 to 30 miles per hour in about 5 seconds. He loves to run. Recently I just had my best friend pass. He was an orange tabby cat. His name was Kitty. He was 16 years old. I will never forget him. My new kittens names are Smokey and Bandit. After the movie Smokey and The Bandit. Smokey is a grey tabby cat. He looks just like my other cat. He is funny. He is smart. He is just like Kitty. He reminds me so much of him that I think Kitty was like reincarnated in him. Bandit is pure white with just a little grey stripe on his head. He has beautiful green eyes and he is very fat. I love them very much. These are my pets.

Noah, a black and white medium hair - adopted during a thunder storm.
Muff, an oversized white short hair - he looks like one of the muffs women used to use during the winter to keep theri hands warm. PJ, orange and white long hair - named by my son after a storybook character, PJ Funnybunny.
Peppermint, a long haired white cat, who's name I really can't explain, and I'm the one who named her!
And Sadie Marie, a gray and black tabby who's mom was a feral cat my friend took in - long story. Sadie just fit her - for some reason with the whole feral thing, I thought she should have an old fashioned name. Just don't ask how her big brothers and sister get along with her - things are still a little "tense" but, it will pass - it always does.

i have 5 pets there names are buster, Clint, SAM, Lillie and Leah. they are part of my family. they each have there own personality. I enjoy there company and look forward to there greeting when i come home. I love to care for them, the unconditional love they have is priceless.

Over 100 animals

1. Two french bulldogs - 2 years old, male white Sammy, black tiger stripe female, Paula..they are chubby and hilarious as always..when it comes to keeping the house clean they know who's boss.they will never dirty the house, because just my angry looks will tell them so. They hide whenever i show them an angry face.
2. Two japanese turtles - 10 years old, Turtle 1 male, Turtle 2 female..couldn't name them so i called them this way. They follow me wherever i walk, cos i'm the only one who feeds them. They love fish food.

I have exactly 39 pets yes 39. I cant name most of them because some are still babies but i will :) Most of my pets have been left at shelters and i pick them up because i can not stand a pet without a loving home

My family helps me handle them and they give me the best time of my life.

I've got Budgies - loads of them, they each have names and I know them all. They live in an aviary outside where I visit them several times a day for an hour or two at a time. I also have lovebirds, kakarikis, cockatiels and quails in the aviary and these are VERY loud, but I love them all!!
My best budgie lives in doors and comes with me everywhere I go. His name is Juno and he is my pic ID. He loves to come out with me in the car and I take him shopping, he hides in my bag when we are in the shop. He hates it when I have to go out without him and he sulks and is moody with me when I get home. He sleeps on a swing above my bed and in the morning he jumps down and bites my feet to wake me up - he's my alarm clock!!

2 Cats One is a grey short hair with goldish green eyes, her name is Olive. The other is a pure white short hair with on blue eye and one brown eye, her name is Ivory.
2 Dogs They are sisters form the same litter. One is black, grey and white short hair with one blue eye and one brown eye. Her name is Lacey. The other is a tri color long hair with a blue eye and a brown eye as well. Her name is Kylie
I also have sharks, angels, gouramis, plecos and snails in my 135 gallon tank. As far as I'm concerned, they are all part of the family.

I have a female (spayed)Siberian Husky 2yrs old, Silver and White blue eyes. Her name is Timida Azul, (shy blue) because she is extreemly shy and has a bunch of medical problems with her hips, eyes and gastrointestinal. I got her when she was a little over 4 months old, she was the last puppy left, extreemly shy of everybody and everything. She broke my heart being all alone and cowerig in the corner of her kennel. She jabbers,and prances around. She is such a lady. Despite her flaws she's a wonderfully loving dog and I wouldn't have her any other way.

I have a male (neutered)Polish Boxer, 2yrs old, Fawn. His name is Duddley Done Right. He's extreemly friendly, clumbsy, energetic and thinks hes a 60lb lap dog. He has a deformed btm jaw and tounge, snores, farts, drools and has vivid dreams about chasing something. I rescued him from the vet clinic where I was working at, where he was 8 weeks old and barely 6lbs. He was sick and slightly deformed, and his owners wanted him euthanised. I couldn't bare the thought of this poor pup dying because his owners didn't want to deal with a sick puppy, so I asked the old owners if they would be interested in rehoming him. They didn't care one way or another, so I brought him home. Now he's extreemly healthy and my personal 60lb cuddle bug.

I have 6 parakeets, all named after the characters from the Friends Sitcom. Monica is a yellow faced and blue female, her man is Chandler a dilute green (lime green). Racheal is a lutino yellow girlie, and her man Ross is the typical green and yellow parakeet. Joey is a white, blue and yellow calico like pretty boy, and his girl is Pheobee is a yellow, green and blue calico like ditzy girl. Monica is the boss of the cage, she calls all the shots, Chandler is always taking the heat from Monica. Racheal is a sweet heart and so pretty. Ross loves to put out his two cents on everything. He's always got something to say. Joey is such a clown always goofing off and finding stuff he shouldn't be into, just like Pheobee, put something new in there and she'll be the first one to check it out. She keeps the humor alive in the cage.

I have a 9 month old Standard Heter Grey Chinchilla named Lita. She is such a sweetie, and so cute. I love to watch her play, eat, take her dust baths, cuddle her and watch her go round and round in her little exercise ball. When she gives you that look, you can't help but your heart melt a little bit.

I love all my pets, very much, I admire their different personalites and couldn't imagine my life with out them. They make my family compete

Currently, we rent, so we can only have caged pets. But, here's what we have:

10 dwarf hamsters- Tiffany, Amy, Flint, Riff, Raff, Jasper, Domino, Spaz, Charcoal, and Toffee. 5 girls, 5 boys, 2 were pet shop purchases (Spaz %26 Domino), 2 were born in 1 litter (Riff %26 Raff), and 6 were born into a 2nd litter (Tiffany, Amy, Flint, Jasper, Charcoal, and Toffee). We currently have them all seperated into 6 cage set ups.

7 hermit crabs, all purple pinchers, set up in a 40 gallon aquarium- Hermione, Racer, Shelley, Beast, Colossus, Shimmer, and Blue Ranger. We bought them in that order- Hermione first, then Racer %26 Shelley together, then Beast, then C-Los, then Shimmer %26 Blue Ranger together. They just got moved from a 20 gallon aquarium last night to our new 40 gallon. They seem to be LOVING it so far, so yay! So much extra room to explore. We also set them up with half sand (on one side) and half eco-earth on the other side. I have a long curved thick branch I found in our back yard in the tank, which takes up about 75% of the length, and provides awesome climbing for them.

Next we have a small plastic portable tank (maybe 2 gallons?) with an aquatic frog and a snail in it, no names.

Lastly, we have a 3.5 gallon plastic tank with a baby tarantula in it, a chilean rose haired tarantula named Oddish. Our 4 year old named him after a purple radish shaped Pokemon. In a few weeks, we'll be buying a 10 gallon aquarium with a hood to keep him in, but right now, he doesn't need the extra room, and in fact feels safer in smaller spaces. He's great to watch, though. He's big enough that we can see him spinning his webs, which looks cool. We have a small plastic tank we keep with crickets in it for feeding him. He's fun to watch eating, too. He watches the cricket until the cricket is dumb enough to approach him, then quick as can be, snatches them up. We've even seen him roll them in web, and stick them aside for later when he's hungry. Awesome.

I am down to just one rat and one basset hound. I started training this basset hound for these people and they gave him to me. I must have been crazy to take him, but I couldn't see him go to a shelter.

At one time, 3 labs., 15 male bettas, 22 female bettas, 1 horse of my own (boarded) and training 6 others, an iguana, a bird, a big mouthed frog, a tank of African Cichlids and a red eared slider.

Life at my house was crazy for a while. Now I have just the rat and the dog.

Wait don't forget my 2 hampsters, and 1 gunie pig.

I want a large variety of pets, and at least more than one of each kind, so what do you think is good? Or, what pets do you have %26 how many?

i have a very big dog (rottweiler), 2 cats, 22 birds, several fishes.

if you want lots of pets, you should keep in mind that pets needs lots of attention and taking care of. consider how much time, money, care and space you are able to give to your pets.

if you have a big space (like a farm) and money is not a problem, then you can have several kinds - like horses, pigs, chicken, ducks, goats, cows etc. and of course, cats, dogs, birds maybe even fishes.

also remember that not all animals will get along, so have separate areas for those pets that might not be in good terms with each other.

if you have a small space, then i would say that you'd probably get a small dog and a couple of cats. always keep in mind that it's not good to keep animals in cramped spaces.

keeping a lot of pets would be a big responsibility but it can also give you lots of joy.

If you live out in the country all kinds and many pets are acceptable but if you live in the city I would say 2 pets are good. I have 2 dogs.

As many as you can reasonable care for and feed. Keep in mind that all of these animals will need veterinary care at some point, and that's not free. They all need food, shelter, and socialization.

it all depends on how much time, energy, and money you have. Space and where you live is also an issue. Consider these things before you stock up on to many.

Your pets are not going to get along and everything is just peachy. You have to properly confine the different species.

I have dogs, cats, birds, rats, lizards, a rabbit and turtles. I also do wildlife rehabilitation during the summer. I rehab bunnies, opossums, squirrels.

I have a bird room where I keep my birds, rabbit, rats %26 turtles all in seperate cages. Pretty big cages because I believe in keeping my animals in large cages. My dogs are outside.

My rehab animals I keep in my bird room and then move outside in their own run away from the dogs.

It is a real joy to keep multiple pets but you have to keep them seperated if they don't get along.

As far as food I buy all my food in bulk. It really saves on the food bill.

Be sure only get the animals you can afford to properly care for.

As Many As You Want, But You Should Make Sure That You Can Afford The Supplies You Need. Food, Litter Box, etc. Also, Make Sure That You Don't Neglect Any Of Them.

Think carefully and seriously about this - why the need and can you really look after each one properly. This will be a full commitment - are you abel to give that.

I have four dogs and two cats. I can tell you that four dogs are more than a handful; especially when they are big dogs like mine. My theory is the more the better when it comes to pets, but the most important thing is that each of them gets enough love, attention and romping room! Good luck! PS vet bills really add up and you want to make sure that you can financially take care of these pets if and when something goes wrong, and trust me if you have more than one something is bound to happen!

Well it depends on what you can handle. At the moment I have 2 cats a dog and 3 bunnies and that enought with school and extra curicular activities. And a breeder down my streed has 70 bunnies and she spends 2 hrs a day feeding and watering them all twice. I find that amazing! and I get to take care of them all YIPPI!!

One is a golden and white beagle of 9 years, Cheyenne (sometimes called Cheyenne Jermouskey). The other is my cat of 7 years, Salem.

They're both extremely smart (Salem likes to open cabinets and doors) and SUCH big babies. Salem sleeps on my bed with me and Cheyenne has her own bed in the living room just outside my dads bedroom.

What is soo special about the guinea pigs are they fun can you play with them alot which is better a boy or girl?

Could it be because they squeak and purr? I don't know if it is better to have a male or female. My sister and I had a female one for a while. She would squeak cutely everytime my sister called her and she would purr when the back of her neck was scratched. We played with her a little, but it's not like playing with a dog or cat.

Our family had several of the best guinea pigs ever. The oldest was believe it or not 15 years old when he died, his name was Tigger. My young son taught them how to climb stairs and they would follow him up to his room. I guess what I like best about them is the way they call for you the minute you enter the house. It makes you feel loved.

I love my guinea pigs. I have 3, one boy and 2 girls. I think they are easy to care and handle, at least they don't kick you like rabbit do. I don't think any different between boy and girl. It depends on what you have. They all have different personalty. I had a boy who can sit in a bucket and we carry him around. But the boy I have now he doesn't like people that much and he like chew other guinea pig and rabbit hair. The girls one is noisier than the other.

I love guinea pigs. They're fuzzy. :) And they make those cute little sounds.

Actually, my great uncle Bert got killed by a giraffe. He was standing under one while teaching his toy poodle to sit. Unfortunately, the giraffe had already been to obedience school.

I answered a similar question recently about my wing spiders, two in each corner, eeney meeney miny and mo, their lives and their eventual departure. Now that autumn's here I've got three new ones! Only two have names tilly and billy (cos they're now established residents!) the third, we'll see if he/she stays or not!

They make me laugh, when I'm going fast they still come out to repair their webs, they look like little blurs, it obviously doesnt bother them!

I spotted my one as I was driving to work, it was paragliding about 4 inches from the drivers wing mirror, attached by a strand of web.
I was highly amused and narrowly avoided crashing as I watched it claw its way back to the safety of the wing-mirror against the force of the turbulent winds.
As I got out from the car, the spider leapt onto my back, no doubt looking for revenge for my unwillingness to help.

I absolutely love my pets. I have 2 cocker spaniels that had 8 puppies on x-mas morning. The mommy dog woke me up at 1:15 am with the first baby in her mouth. She had brought it to me to see what she had. From that point, she delivered another 7 pups as my sons girlfriend and I laid on the bed with her and comforted her. She had 4 boys and 4 girls. And boy, what alot of work it was until the pups were old enough to be sold. We'll never do that again.
But I still love my Madison and Max.

I have a cat, who likes to sleep on the bed with me, he loves laying his head on his own pillow and having the covers over him. He likes to watch T.V. and comes when you call him. Anyone else have any pets that like to do human activities??

My dog watches tv, comfots me when I cry, he loves to sit in my lap once he saw my 2 year old niece do it. He also show's jealousy of my little niece. He sleeps on his bed and drags a pillow off my bed over to his bed, and lays his head on it. He's also so slow to get up in the morning, becuase he's so tired, just like me! He gets bummed when its rainy and crappy out too. :)

i've never been able to keep one for too long. i give them a good hot bath, and it's all over for them. at least they taste good in butter. i named my last one "pinchy".

AWESOME, make sure to give him stuff to climb on, and an array of new shells and all that, and a light for them to get warmth so they're more active, have fun!

I've had 3..and yes, they're pretty cool. Make sure you have 'new' shells in the cage for it also..so when the time comes, it can find a new "house".

I have 2 of the little critters.One is so small that I have to dig through the sand to find it for it's weekly bath.

Great!! I hope you enjoy these docile creatures. They are really fun to watch. As the first two have indicated, get stuff for them to climb on and 'new' shells and a fairly large terrarium. They have a wide variety of these specifically designed for Hermits in Wal*Mart, if you are in the US or Canada! If not, there are other pet outlets you can try.

We got started with hermit crabs for my daughters 8th birthday. That was July 2004. We currently have 58 of them, spread out in 2 tanks.

It is a horrid practice in this day and age! They make look-alikes. I understand years ago that may not have been an option. The way these animals live and are killed is horrid. I have a friend that I ride with who's horse has lost one eye and is in process of losing the other. He is a little limited, but he manages to keep up with us very well. We go out on different trail rides, and as long as there's another horse, you would never known that he couldn't see. His other senses will compensate some. GIve him lots of love.

I use to live on a 40 acre ranch with 8 horses, this lifestyle rules, city sucks ,its boring and their is nothing to do but go to restaraunts and idiots who think their cool because they have a job. Yah it hurts when a horse is crippiled.

Just because he looks different doesn't mean you should love him any less. He's going to miss his eye a lot less than you would miss him if he had to be put down. Part of maturity is learning to accept differences in the ones we love. I've had a dog with one eye and many other people have had pets and family members who have lost a leg or become deaf or blind as they get older.

We have horses and have been around them almost all my life.
Your horse will adapt to his loss of an eye. But be very care full about approaching him/her from the now blind side. They will be almost totally sightless from that side now, and you will notice them turning there head a lot now so they can see. The horse will adapt to having one eye, but will you adapt to the horses needs? Good Luck

I know it looks different to see your darling horse with just one eye-same if we lost an eye. But remember that your horse needs your love, attention and care more now than ever before. It'll take a while for him to adjust to his environment again. Take him for walks and reteach his pasture obstacles to him. Soon, he'll be able to cope just fine with just the one eye. I had a mare who lost an eye during a breeding session. The vet sewed the opening closed and she never looked the same-but I loved her just the same. She was a wonderful brood mare-always knew exactly where her foals were laying and never stepped on one of them. So don't worry-at least you have a healthy horse. You did the right thing. Soon, you will not even notice his missing eye. Good luck sweetie.

I worked on a standardbread Horse farm while I was going through college then, when I graduated I worked for an Equine Insurance Agency.

It was interesting work. I started out typing policies but quickly moved to the claims department where I was responsible for gathering the information to support or deny claims.

I would come back from lunch and have to open the mail which always included several necropsy reports.a bit grewsome. You would be amazed at how many evil people out there kill their horses in cruel ways to get the insurance money. I prefer to think of the other nice people in sad situations who I helped get a fair settlement.

One night.I was on call duty.I received a call from a woman in tears.she raised minature horses and her barn was buring down. He son had recieved severe burns on his back. He had been trying to save some of the horses and the tar from the roof had dripped down on him. They had 4 badly burned horses they needed to put down and I had to grant them the permission to euthanise this poor creatures. It was heart breaking. It was nice to be able to send them a large check so they could begin rebuilting thier business though. It could never replace the animals they loved and lost but at least they could keep their farm.

ANYWAY! The point of the tale is this. If you love horses there are lots of different jobs you can do to be invlolved in the industry. There are many colleges who have Equine Studies as a major. Think about it!

Well if your talking about a empty tank, make sure it isn't deep. You can only keep 1 hamster in 1 cage, tank or something. If you put 2 hamsters together, they will not get along. You may only put 2 of them together is when they are ready to mate. When they are mating, let them. (It has to be a boy and girl though) Then after they are done, take the male or female out. When the babies come, Don't put the male in. Don't touch the babies either. If you do, then the scent of the mom's babies will be different and the mom may attack them or abandom them. So yeah. Hamsters like everything to themself so only 1.

only 1 if it's syrian--a pr of same sex ones if they r dwarf ones. syrians can only be housed 1 per cage no matter what the cage size. they r territorial loners. people often get 10 gallon aquariums but they arent big enough for even one. they will be quite miserable with a cage so small. best to buy a couple cages %26 attach them togther. some places have an extra level u can attach to the aquarium that makes them ok. u dont want a boy %26 girl even if theyre dwarfs because they will have lots of babies quickly. and they sometimes eat them--especially first time moms when they r too young. and if syrians u have to separate them so thats way too many cages. if u insist on an aquarium get a large one (at least 20 gal---the bigger the better) and make sure u buy a hamster ball so he can get exercise daily.

none. Aquariums are for fish. There is not enough ventilation in an all glass aquarium. Get it a good big cage so that it can exhibit natural behaviours like climbing the bars. If you are referring to the normal syrian or golden hamster than you cannot keep more than one anyway as they will fight to the death. How many guinea pigs to keep together?

I currently have 27 guinea pigs. 6 are male, 21 are female. I currently have each female paired with another, except for 5 of them, which are paired with (nuetered) males. The other male can not be housed with other guinea pigs as he has a disease that is contagious to other guinea pigs if he rubs up against them. But I think I need to minimize the number of cages I have (just a little). So how many guinea pigs should I keep in a cage that is around 50" x 52"? Just would like to know (I already know how to introduce them and everything else.)

That size cage is suitable for about 4 GP's. They need room to excercise and if you put too many in there, you will be cleaning it 3 or 4 times a day to keep them healthy. How about trying to sell some of your pigs to a local pet store.

Well.. That all depends on the area the deer are found. If you are taking about Northern Wet Sided deer, then they can lay an average of 1200 eggs in its life time, however the lesser known Eastern Striped Limber legged deer lays somewhere between 800-200,000 eggs in a lifetime! I had 3 cats and 4 dogs - I know and farm. I took care of all my animals and loved every minute of it. Some advice - dont have more animals than allowed in your area. I had to find new homes for all my cats and 1 of my dogs. Because some stupid by laws say's that any household can not exceed more than 3 animals. It was one of the hardest times of my life.

7 - one Golden retriever and 6 cats. The cats are my favorites, although I never intended to have this many! hahaha. Also have horses.

each animal is fav for different reasons. the crabs are easiest to care for, the fish are beautiful to watch and are relaxing, the bird talks to you and makes good compainion, and the dogs. ok so the dogs I have now aren't so much, but the dog I had before the dashound was the best protection and a very loyal companion (even if she couldn't talk back like the birds)

All in all, I would have to say that my dog that passed away about 7 years ago will always be my favorite, but of the current pets, our youngest bird is my fav because she is the tamest of the birds since we hand fed her. The breeder didn't know what she was doing, and the parents were too busy tending to the next clutch to take care of the sole surviving baby (ours).

I have a 15year old Staffy x Kelpie, a Lovebird and a Budgie. But at the moment while my brother is away I'm also looking after a 3 year old Boarder Collie and a turtle.

it really depends on the town size. i live in a rural area, they take in 100 - 200. if you want to know the local numbers, check our your local website. they might have the numbers on there, or you can sign up for a membership. depending on the size of the town, it'll cost $5 - $25 and each shelter has different benefits. I get the newsletter because of my membership, which has the numbers in it once a year. plus, it's another way of supporting the animals!

The most persuasive arguement to make people want to adopt that I know of is the method of euthanasia that is used in many shelters.

I worked in one for a year. The turnover rate for employees at shelters is very high because of the task of euthanasia.

Here is where some of you may want to stop reading.

The dogs are restrained by a handler (often muzzled if they offer to bite or fight back). They are often very frightened and many have never been handled. A solution is injected into their vein in their foreleg, and then they slump and die. This is the ideal scenario. But, many times, the vein blows and the procedure is incomplete. Then the person doing the injection has to try the other leg. Sometimes that fails also. The dogs invariably die with their eyes open staring at you (I felt like they looked at me with blame and anger), then they lose control of their bodily functions. No dignity in death whatsoever. Cats are normally injected straight into their hearts. To make sure that the animal is dead, they touch the animals open eye to look for a reaction. Ugh.

Horrible way to go. I adopted out as many animals to my family and friends as I could, and took home as many as they would let me. I tried to pick the ones that I knew would not get homes otherwise. I hated that job, and only took pleasure in the fact that I tried to make their short lives more pleasant when I could. When they began to teach me to give the injections, I QUIT that job.

All of my dogs and cats are all spayed and neutered.

I worked in a shelter where the city was 50 000 people - every week we would euthanize about 20 cats/kittens 1 rabbit or guinea pig and 2-3 dogs/puppies
more in the later summer and early winter. fewer animals would be admitted through the winter and early spring so we had more room

some were euthanized becuase of health but probably fewer than 10 %.. most it was simply lack of space - we kept animals in the back for about 2 weeks to see if their original owner would claim them - most dogs were claimed.. few cats.. then if their was space the remaining pets would move into adoption where they would remain for about 2 months.. after 2 months if they were not adopted they were euthanized.. usually they were depressed or agressive at this time anyhow.

kittens and pups stood a far better chance.. but not always

in bigger cities they put down hundreds a week, sometimes hundreds a day. I couldnt imagine working there.. how sad for the staff.

adopting is often cheaper than taking a free pet becuase the vet care is done already and often they have good health guarantees.. since shelters get discounts and are non-profit its cheaper to adopt then get this done on your own..

** I should add after reading the other posts - cats at our shelter were not euthanized that way -typically and most of the times it was "peaceful" but obviously unpleasant. the saddest was euthanizing newborns.. but it was the adults I felt worse for - killed simply becuase they are not cute enough to be adopted.. how sad.

I used to work at an animal shelter. I have seen people find their lost pets after years of looking. Once a husky who had been missing for 7 years turned up at our shelter; another time a Scottish Terrier who had been stolen from his yard 5 years previously came in. Both were reunited with shocked but happy owners.
Cats also can be gone for years before returning, and they are known to hitch rides on planes etc. Fewer cats are reunited with their owners than dogs because people do not give them as much identification (tags, tatoos, microchips) as they do dogs. About 54% of lost dogs are identified and reunited with their owners, only about 4% of cats, at least at the shelter where I worked.
I've never seen a lost bird reunited with its owner, perhaps because the climate in Canada is too harsh for the tropical birds we tend to keep as pets. Also, pet birds are much more vulnerable to predators than wild ones.
As a child, I lived in a rural area and lost my cat . He never came back, but I kept looking for a year. Now that I am older, I do not let my cats go out unattended as I've seen all the terrible things that can happen to them. Also, they can put a sizeable dent in the songbird population as they are not native to North America.

Cats will survive a lot longer than dogs out in the world. Unfortunately for cats they usually go into sewers, and get lost and lord knows where they end up coming out if they ever do get out. So if you have lost a cat, you can bet it's in a sewer system.

I think you would net get frustrated but you would not have time to keep searching as intensively, and you would run out of things to do, because you can only call the shelters and the cops so many times. I once lost my dog. I was walking him one night after my aunt and uncle left. I turned to walk back to the house and next thing I knew, he was gone. He slipped out of his collar and I didn't even realize it. We kept looking for him. We called animal clinics and kept checking to see if he was found. 4 days later, my dad got some good news. Someone had found him and took care of him. They had reported a found dog, so that's how we found him again. It turns out he tried to follow my aunt and uncle (who knows why) and got tired and had to stop. That's where he was discovered by these kind people.

We originally got him because a friend of a friend of my dad's had found him wandering the Ben Franklin Bridge (major bridge that connects Philadelphia to New Jersey) at around 1 o'clock in the morning. He was a very lucky pooch.

I would look for as long as I thought there was a chance I would find the pet.

I think i owuld only look for it for about 3 days i would let the dound know about whats it looks like and if they got anything in that looked like that if they could please call me i would leave them with information about it and i would put up signs then after i was done looking i would wait for a phone call or something but i would never give up on hoping for it to come back.

I believe in preventative measures though. I don't let my pets run loose throughout the neighborhood. All of them have collars with tags or microchips. I keep good, currently photos of all of them If they should get loose, I think I have a good chance of recovering them.

my neice has a turtle, she's had it since it was a baby from the petshop.

please think twice before getting a turtle. they live 20+ years

However, it is likely that in the case of a domesticated hamster that it would survive for a short period only. Such a hamster would not have the ability to obtain food for itself, and would probably die within a week.

If you are contemplating releasing your hamster into the wild this is not a good idea. Death from starvation, while painful per se, is made all the worse in the wild. Animals such as crows will prey on a dying animal. It is common for them to first take the eyes.

Love your hamster and keep it out of the wild.

We lost our hamster for a week. She wasn't really in the wild though, I found her in my closet eating a tootsie pop. If she had made it outside, all hope would be lost. If you are considering turning your hamster loose, check for a local rescue group. If you lost her, listen for her at night. If she's in your house, you'll be able to hear her chewing on things.

It depends on alot of things. When we lived in Africa a hamster of ours escaped and started a cross-bred colony with a mouse she met. But here in the UK the winters are a bit harsh for outdoor survival, perhaps a resouceful hamster would find a nice warm spot by a radiator pipe and settle there.

Most wild hamsters originate in Russia and they don't live very long at all. Pet hamsters can live a couple years if you take care of them inside. I wouldn't think an escapee pet hamster would do too well if it got out.

There are wild hamsters, in parts of Asia, unfortunately they are becoming more rare. They live for a couple of years in the wild, but a domestic hamster that has escaped is unlikely to live long due to predators and that it will find it difficult to get natural food.

if it escaped in the house- until it had caused major damage- in the wild (outside) probably not that long!!

I have a large lop-earred bunny - not sure what type, she has quite long hair and quite fluffy. I bought her as a baby and was told she was a dwarf - she clearly isn't as she is huge. She has been to the vet who agreed she wasn't a dwarf! She is now 13 months old. I have got so fond of her, I would really like to know how long I might have her for. Any ideas??

They can live for 10-12 years in ideal conditions and barring ill health. They do better indoors than out (lack of predators, better bond with owner who will spot illness faster etc).
As far as the dwarf thing goes, there is a recent addition to this class, the dwarf lop (dwarf french lop). The french lop can grow to about 16-18 lbs, the dwarf version of this is 8-10 lbs, still a whole lot of rabbit. I have two of them who live in my dining room and are looking at me as I type.
Your girl will live a lot longer if you have her spayed, currently about 80% of does over 3 years will develop uterine cancer, which is a killer, so the sooner the better if you haven't already.
It's worth joining some online groups where you will be able to get a lot of good rabbit care advice.

I raised chickens for an agriculture show a while back, but we raised them to get as big as possible as fast as possible in order to "make the sell", so many of mine died. I would usually start with 30 and end up with about 20 or so after only a few months. However, I was fairly harsh on them (not letting them sleep much, giving them electrolytes and other proteins in order to bulk up the breast). Not exactly sure what breed mine were, but they were white.

How long will a dead cat under my house stink?

The neighbors cat got attacked by a dog and went under my house and died. I couldn't find a way to get the cat out when it first went under and the neighbor said the cat would come back out when it was hungry. I think it died under there and there is a very bad smell coming up through the vents. I believe it is the cat.*sigh* .Dang owners should have tried to get it and take care of it but they didn't!! How long will the smell lasts? I am too freaked out to try and crawl under myself.so removal is out of the question. Animal control won't deal with it ..neighbors are dumbshits and won't deal with it either!

You should call Animal Control, or whoever is in charge of regulating animals and their diseases in your country.

In the meantime, make up a bottle of a strong mixture of bleach or disinfectant, get someone to crawl in there and douse the body with the solution. If you can get the powdered form of disinfectant, that'll be less messy, put a layer of that over it. After the disinfectant, cover the whole thing with lots of sawdust.

If it's lying on soil, it'll melt away after a few months. You may have to apply the disinfectant once or twice more. However, it's skeleton will be there for a long time and will take years to break down. Unless you go in there and bring it out.

If it's lying on concrete, you'll have to clean it up after a few months when it's all dried up and there's not much smell.

You could put some sort of container over it to contain the smell somewhat while it's decaying.

Well, when a mouse died in the wall one year, it stank for what seemed like forever. I'm thinking at least a month or two. Pay some kid to crawl under your house and get it out. haha

It will stink until you have it removed. Animal control is there for this very reason. This could be a potential health hazard and I'm certain they wouldn't want to risk the health of you or others. It would be really bad press. Remember, it's your tax dollars at work and they owe you!

Oh man that's terrible,what's worse the smell will probably stay for about 6 weeks,until the decaying process is complete.An other big factor is - what part of the world are U in,climate wise? If it is warm where U are and will be for awhile the smell and decomposure will run it's course ,if it is getting cold where U are it could prolong it. Either way it sounds like it's in your ventilation system now-get online and find a solution for odor control.I know it can be very bad so look up what it takes to kill or silence skunk odor.Just a suggestion-Good Luck!

we breed hamsters and last litter had 5 babies and my husband who has been breeding always says that you should never handle them until they stop being fed only by there mother so it is hard to give a exact time. as soon as they start to eat normal food and dont suckle from mummy as much then it is fine. that way if the mum disowns them they can still feed themselves.
(a few times i have cuddled them when they were only a few days old and they were tiny and there mum didnt dis-own them but i wouldnt recomend it)

I know that they're very different so you probably can't go by this, but when my rat had babies, she let me hold them right off. She was in the nest and I had my hands in there petting them and she was cool with it. She didn't ever go after them, or even try to go after the ones that died. Like I said for hampsters it's different, but hey if you wanna play with babies, get a rat.

She is a Quarter horse and was bred towards the end of May. I havent noticed her gaining weight or anything different at all. So when should she start to show and when should I start to worry if she doesn't?

Going for what I remember reading, the foal inside the mare does it's most growing in the third trimester. Some mares don't show that much and others show soon after being breed. What breed is the stud she was breed too? That might also affect how much she shows. If you are concerned you should have the vet out to ultrasound her and make sure she is in foal. What condition is she in? If she more on the overweight side, she might not show for a while either. Also many mares don't show until like right up to the last moment, the reason many people don't realize they bought a pregnant mare until she ready to foal. Hope that helped answer your question.

My mare started to show at 5 months gestation. My now gelding was a huge foal as it was. No suprised she was showing.

However, I have known some mares to not start to show until around 7 to 8. Especially if malnutritioned or not being fed correctly according to development.

i have just brought two male rats and they live in a 24"x12"x18" glass cage with selves which i think is alright?

First of all congRATs on getting your new boys.
I would handle them straight away. I have a method that has never failed. Once I get the rats home, I put them in their cage and let them settle for half an hour or so while I get my bits together. I get some baby food(and a spoon!), tissues, baby wipes and water bottle and put them close at hand. I then put on my tshirt with a pouch sewn on, an overshirt and a pouch hanging by a string. I then go and get the rats and sit down with them. To start with the rats will stay either under my shirt or in on of the pouches. Depending on the rats personality, they will come out and explore at different times. Every so often I offer them food or water. This helps them to get used to being fed outside of the cage. The tissues and baby wipes are to clean up any messes. I stroke them and hold my hand over them(lightly touching their backs) and under them and eventually slowly pick them up. I keep them out for about 30 minutes to an hour and repeat this every couple of hours for the first couple of days. My rats quickly learn that I am a safe place and are eager to come out and climb all over me. I find that this method works much quicker and better than the "proper" methods I used to use. The only time this hasnt worked was due to the rats personality, he isnt a people person. I tried every other method with him as well with no luck.

My suggestion would be to get a cage if you can, the ammonia builds up really quickly in tanks, especially with males. Ammonia is a cause of respitory problems which can leave long term health problems(and shortened life) if not treated quickly. I just checked with a cage calculator(link below) and it says that your tank is only big enough for one rat. The advantage to cages is that you can hang hammocks and ropes and hanging baskets. Plus rats can climb the bars which helps keep them fit and they enjoy it.

You didn't specify the age of the rats. Be careful when first handling them, as they can bite really hard.

If they are just young ones, they are quite jumpy, but now would be the time to start handling them on a regular basis so you can start training them.

If they are previously owned adults and have been handled regularly, you should be able to handle them now.

If they are sub-adult or full adult rats (which is about 3-4 months old -- old enough to breed), and have never been handled, or handled very little, you will need to gain their trust before you will be able to handle them.
Some rats will always remain afraid of humans and bite you all the time. You will not be happy with them.
If this is the case, you may want to return them to the place where you got them, if possible, and get young ones. Those will tame down nicely (usually), especially if you are kind and have lots of patience.
Other than the smells of the cages, (if not cleaned regularly), they make excellent little pets.

Once they have settled in, you can introduce them to your hand- don't make wild grabs at them or they will become fearful of you. Rats are naturally curious so they will come and sniff you. If you make sudden movements they might bolt, so be very still. Watch out for those teeth, they may try to nibble at your fingers out of curiosity. Make sure you wash your hands BEFORE you handle them. If your fingers smell of that tasty food you have just been handling they might bite you thinking you are edible. Eventually they will get used to your hand and it makes it a little easier for you to start handling them.

The size of the cage sounds okay for two baby rats if the measurements are in inches.

It depends on the crab. Sometimes, they will change often. I have one who for a long time changed shells daily, until she finally settled on one she likes. She hasn't changed since.

More often than not, though, they won't change shells unless they are outgrowing one, or getting too large for it. When they molt, they actually shrink for a while, too, so they might transfer to a smaller shell.

Make sure the shells you have are size appropriate to the crabs. You should have at least 3 per crab- 1 smaller, 1 the same size, and 1 bigger.

Don't toss any that someone has already used. Just clean it with dechlorinated water, and put it back in.

A few weeks is all it took with my hamsters (and I've had a few). The best way I've found is to build a temporary play area e.g. using VCR cases as boundary walls (dvds are too thin) and put in some toilet roll tubes (for it to play) and some treats. Put the hamster in it for 15-20 minutes everyday and try holding food out to it when it's playing around in your pen, soon the hamster will associate food with you (your hands) and you can try picking it up within the play pen, but hold it low to the ground coz hamsters love to jump! Gradually the hamster will becoome less jumpy and you should be able to remove it from your play pen and viola! Tame Hamster!

My gelding, who I breed my mare for, only took me 4 months to break in the saddle and 1 year of walking, troting, loping at age 3.5 and at age 6 now, he mastered side stepping both ways. No trainers what so ever, just me.

He also need to be taught to respect and trust the human handler, never biting kicking or striking. After he's accepting the saddle there's along process of teaching him aides and getting him used to balancing a rider. Then he's got to be trained in the discipline you wish to pursue which could take months or years.

For example I ride dressage. A higher level dressage horse may not be ready for his Grand Prix shows until he's had 10 years of training and showing experience.

I have read that guineas don't typically sleep with their eyes closed and that they can be in a sleep like state with their eyes open. Maybe you are missing the short times his/her eyes are closed. But vomiting puts a lot of pressure on the body because of the long distance from the stomach to the head, so vomiting for a giraffe can be dangerous and can cause fatal aspiration pnemonia. It is especially dangerous when a giraffe is under anethesia, because the giraffe is lying down, an unnatural position for a giraffe. But giraffes are extreamly picky eaters, so I guess mother nature made it that way to prevent vomiting from eating the wrong things. I looked up vomiting on a lot of websites and even asked a zookeeper, but nobody knew how long it takes for a giraffe to vomit. I am truely sorry. Maybe you could ask the guys on mythbusters?

I believe it depends on the caterpillar species. First, moths do not make a chrysalis, they make cocoons (hairy things). Butterflies make a chrysalis. From Monarch Watch:

Turner stated that since horses will live until 30 or 40 years of age (sometimes a bit more even) that it is likely around 2 years per 1 year of humans, as a 40 year old horse is quite old, and not nearly as many horses make it to 40 as they do 30. Now, if our hypothesis of 2 to 1 were to hold up, then horses should be teenagers from about 6 years to 10. But since this isn't the case, we can look the other way and say that 2-3 horse years correlates to 12-18 humans years in a 6 to 1 ratio. But if 6 to 1 were the ratio, then a 40 year old horse would be 240 years old in human years! See the problem?
What I concluded from my search is that the reason you don't hear about a simple equation for estimating horse to human years is that it is non-linear. This means that it isn't a simple number, like multiplying by 7, as it is for dogs. It is likely a logarithmic or negative exponential curve, which obviously isn't easy to explain! However, you can estimate by starting at 6:1 when they are young and gradually decreasing it until 2:1 when they are probably in their mid-20's. If you're trying to kill a fly, be aware they have a highly evolved evasion sense. They can feel changes in windspeed and temperature long before any flyswatter or newspaper gets near it.

There is one way you can always get the fly assuming you can position your hands above it. Clap your hands roughly 3 inches directly above the fly. If done right, it always works because flies always evade the same way.

Ducks can spend a week laying eggs.. the timer for hatching does not begin until they actually begin to sit or brood..

Fertile eggs can be laid and sit and be fine with no mom on them. as long as they dont freeze

But soon as Mom begins to sit on them and gets them up to the correct temp then incubation begins. and if the eggs get cold after this the chick inside will die.

If your duck is outside and sincee she is laying now it must be warm where you live.. she will get off the nest to get water or food. every day it would be good to provide her a small pool for swimming in if she does not have swimming water now.
When ducks swim they bring back water on thier feather under the belly and that wetness then gets onto the eggs,, which helps provide humidity for the eggs.. mom provides the heat..

You may notice her leave at around the same times each day as well she will know when the eggs are ok to leave..

Also in the last week she may not leave but sit most the time.. you can provide her food or water close to the nest if she will let you just dont put it wher she can spill it on the nest.

The eggs may not all hatch at once either and some may not hatch at all.
She may have some hatch then sit some more for others to hatch. if most have hatched and she abandons the nest and does not come back to it at all or 1 week has passsed then simple remove the eggs. Carefully as they wil not be good to break open! eeeew

If you notice her eggs in the nest are dirty. no worries. she will clean them dont wash them.. chicks get air through the shell.. You will also see you mom turn or roll the eggs daily ith her feet or rump..its okfor her to do it but you should not handle them unless you are trrained in candling.

Same goes for any that seem to struggle hatching. let them be. they will work at it then est work rest and so on and it can take a while and they may loook tired and like they cant do it but they will. its important the ducklings hatch without human help get out of the shells.. they use this time as well to absorb the yoke sac which is vital to them in the first 2 days of life..

One hatched. make sure the reg feed you use for mom duck is a crumble not a pellet.. crush pellets if that is what you use so its small enough for them to eat

Your mom may not have begun to incubate the eggs yet .. you will know once she does. she will sit most all the time and not get off the nest much.

I'm married and my husband never had pets growing up, so as adults we adopted two cats and dog. Now the dog has been gone just over three years, and the oldest cat just recently. My husband has taken both deaths very hard. (we have no children) As an animal lover I want to "jump back in", as it were, yet he is reluctant. Should I give him more time to grieve or just move on to another pet? Don't get me wrong, I grieve with him over the loss, yet I know pets don't have the life expectancy that we wish, and I can grieve my pet and love a new one at the same time. I just need to know if I should give him more time or force the issue and adopt a pet.

You sound like a very thoughtful and loving wife!
To answer your question, there is this idea that still says that because pets aren't people that their loss is, essentially unimportant. Here we hear a lot of the phrase "get over it" from well meaning but not very sensitive people (ever notice that those who say "get over it" can never fully explain how to do that?).
The fact, however, is that we mourn the loss of anyone we love, whether it is a spouse, dog, cat, bird or even a pet tarantula. We each need our time to grieve and we all need to understand that there will never be a time when we don't miss our departed loved one.

However, I have to admit that three years since the loss of your dog is a long time. You didn't mention how recently your cat died. I wonder if your husband is suffering from what is called "masked grief" where, basically, he hides his grief so as not to upset other people. It is equally likely that his emotional investment in the love and care for those pets was heavy and so his loss is just as heavy.

Wait a little longer (let's say a few weeks). Then, if need be, talk with him about the idea of seeing a counsellor. Emphasize that it is not because you think he's overdoing things but that you love him and only want for him to be able to work through any loss and grief issues he may (likely) have.

As for you, well, have you considered volunteering at your local animal shelter or SPCA? Look in your phone book and see if there are any volunteer organizations with a pet motif (such as programs which allow volunteers to bring pets to nursing homes). Remember that you both have your needs and you both need to have your needs met. Don't keep it a secret from him. You could say something like, "*, I know you're really taking the loss of and . I grieve their loss, too but I really need to spend a little time with other pets. So, I've decided to (insert action you've decided to take). It would be nice if you could come with me but I understand if you don't want to."

Finally, never ever force any issue on him. What you think is appropriate grief may not be what he thinks.

Sometimes a new pet can help the healing process. There are so many pets out there that need homes. Tell him that you will be doing a new animal a favor and not betraying the other animals by replacing them "too soon".

You need to convince him to get another pet. When my family dog of 14 years passed away my father could not get over the loss. It was my mom who convinced him that the house was empty without a pet and that getting a new dog would be a great help.

You must realize that one of the reasons he does not want a new pet is because you feel a sense of betrayal to your old pets. Explain that getting a new dog will never replace your old one. Keep this experience in mind when you are getting a new dog. Consider looking for dogs that have a long lifespan in the 14 - 16 range. My parents decided on a Yorkshire terrier and they couldn't be happier. My father is back to playing with the dog and is grateful that my mom convinced him to get another one.

We could not have loved our two dogs any more than we did. Our female died of CHF and within two months our male died of a broken heart. They had been together 9 years. What a beautiful love story, but how it broke our hearts. Their passing was handled with pure dignity and so much love. Within two weeks we had a new little baby girl in our home. I felt a bit guilty at first, considering the idea. knowing we could never "replace" our beloved angels. And believe me we grieved them. But what we did discover is that in order for us to heal, we needed to give our hearts away again. We know our animals are only here for a short while. We need to respect %26 love them as much as we can, considering the unconditional love they provide. but when they go I believe it is important to replace not them but that empty feeling you have. When you give love, it runs through you and makes you feel better! You know if your dog could talk in heaven, he would be telling all the new little angels that yours is a great place to be! :)

Just bring home a new puppy. It helps. I had to put my 11.5 year old dog to sleep last year and waited two months to get a new one. I should have done it sooner.

Special reptile heating pads that are manufactured to maintain a temperature about 20 degrees higher than the air temperature may be used inside the enclosure. There are adhesive pads that can be stuck to the underside of a glass enclosure. Heating pads made for people, available at all drug stores, are also available; these have built-in hi-med-lo switches and can be used under a glass enclosure. You can also use incandescent light bulbs in porcelain and metal reflector hoods to provide the additional heat required for the basking area. All lights must be screened off to prevent the snake from burning itself.

All pythons, especially ball pythons, are very susceptible to thermal burns. For this same reason do not use a hot rock. New on the market are ceramic heating elements. They radiate heat downwards, do not emit light, and are reported to be long lasting. Plugged into a thermostat will enable you to adjust the temperature inside the tank as the ambient room temperature changes with the seasons.

Buy at least two thermometers - one to use in the overall area 1" (2.5 cm) above the enclosure floor, and the other 1" (2.5 cm) above the floor in the basking area. Don't try to guess the temperature - you will either end up with a snake who will be too cold to eat and digest its food or one ill or dead from overheating.

Just make sure there is a heat light on at all times. At night a lot of people use blue bulbs desinged for the night so as not to mess up the animals natural habitate, but still keeping them warm.

I have a lop-eared rabbit. When I bought it at the pet store, the girl said she was a lop-eared dwarf. And then she got huge (and not because I feed her too much). So, I think they were way off. I don't think it is a dwarf.

Actually the average life span of a rabbit is 10-15 years if properly taken care of. If it is given exceptional care, it can live beyond that range. If it is not given the care it needs or if it develops a health condition, it will not live quite as long.

All rabbits are individuals of course just like people. But when taking on a rabbit, it is like taking on a dog or a cat, not a hamster who will die after a few short years. So you have to be willing to make a long term commitment to the animal.

It sounds like it is NOT a dwarf. My sister has a bunny ( floppy ) a large floppy eared rabbit they thought was a dwarf because it was the runt of the litter, she has now had the rabbit for over 10 years and we give it a present every christmas and birthday. It is a big part of her family and we dread the day it dies. But it seems to be very healthy and the VET says she should last another 3 years or so. Amazing but true they have a long life expectancy if well taken care of.

Squeeking and grunting often go along with hormonal aggressiveness in females, so that is nothing particularly special, but pulling out fur means she is intending to make a nest. That is a sign of either being pregnant (which, if your vet is good, shouldn't be the case) or going through a false pregnancy.

If it is a false pregnancy, it should pass fairly soon. Just to me safe, if she has had any access to a male (even through two seperate wire cages that were right up to each other.sometimes males and females manage through a wire cage LOL) it might be a good idea to offer her a nestbox.

I know of someone who had a rat for 6 years. He claimed the reason why his rodent lived so long was because he fed his guy blueberries every day. Blueberries are high in cancer fighting compounds, which science has proven. My longest lived rat lived to be 3 and a bit. If you get a rat from a breeder who knows what they're doing and tries to breed long lived rats, you should have a decent companion that will last many years.

Rats can live up ot five years. My rats have always lived long lives around 5 years, but rats can sometimes get cancer or anything that like normal rodents can get. As long as you keep them healthly and feed them in moderation, they should live a long time.

Feed a good diet (Purina makes an excellent one) and do offer treats such as carrot and other vegetables and some fruits. Make certain they have an adequate supply of water.
